Landscapes in Textile Art

My landscape art process is like painting with fabric. Works include representations of places I have been and found inspiring; including Provence, France; Amsterdam; Prague; Miyajima, Japan; Silver City, New Mexico and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Other creations are influenced by real places yet are entirely imaginary. I am fascinated by both the natural world and architecture found within different cultures.

Roussillon, France

Roussillon, France

Provence, France has been a place of great inspiration for me. I have been to Roussillon twice and the red ochre colors of the surrounding earth and buildings called out to be translated into a textile art piece. This landscape is made of cottons, appliquéd and stitched to add detail.

Many years ago, as a 17 year old, I ventured abroad and worked for several months at The Hotel Brouwer, 83 Single Canal in Amsterdam. This representation of the Brouwer, with a bike like mine in front, is made of cotton fabrics in the dark colors of the place and time.

Silver City, New Mexico is a fabulous town, off the beaten track and worth a visit. Dear friends made this labyrinth and I have recreated it using wool roving, fabric and acrylic paint. Needle felted with some machine stitching. Photo printed on silk.

Purple Mist on the Blue Ridge

Purple Mist on the Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina have many moods and colors. As their name implies, the mountains often appear in shades of blue. Here, I have portrayed the mists in purples hovering in and among the blue mountains. Cotton fabrics with rice paper clouds are machine stitched.

The Great Divide

The Great Divide

This is a political statement piece that looks at our country and world as a great divide. The storm clouds are gathering in this divided world. The person is agonizing over the sharp divide. Red vs. Blue, left vs. right, climate, politics, the future. There is a purple line that weaves back and forth between red and blue indicates some hope - that there are those who travel between the two divides. Created with fabric, paper and acrylic paint.
